• Sarah Jessica Parker Surrogate's Alleged Invader Found Somewhat Guilty
They fought the law and the law won some and lost some. After about 12 hours of deliberations, a jury found Ohio lawman Barry Carpenter guilty of receiving stolen property, theft in office and tampering with evidence in connection with a break-in at the home of the surrogate who carried Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick's twin daughters to term. Carpenter, who's been suspended from his post as chief of the Martin Ferry Police Department, was acquitted of burglary and unauthorized used of property or services. He had been accused of breaking into Ross' place in May to rustle up some pregnancy info to sell to the tabloids. Ross testified last week that she noticed that her belongings had been pawed through, plus ultrasound pictures and some tax documents were missing. A paparazzo ultimately informed her of the scheme, she said. Carpenter admitted to being in Ross' home, but only because he saw a door open. While inside, he testified, he took photos of Ross' surrogacy file containing ultrasound pics and a plaster cast of a pregnant stomach and later showed them to paparazzi. But, he said, he never conspired to profit from any of those goodies. "Barry admits that he acted very stupidly, but denies that he acted criminally," his attorney, Dennis McNamara, said in his closing argument. Bridgeport Police Chief Chad Dojack, who's accused of comasterminding the job, faces trial in January. Carpenter is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 30. He's facing a maximum 10-year prison term if the judge goes whole hog on the three felony convictions. Until then, he remains free on bail but is being stricly monitored by a GPS system. "The bottom line is that there is a victim in this case whose privacy was so gravely intruded upon," said Ohio Assistant Attorney General Emily Laube after the verdict was read. "If you can't trust the police, who can you trust?" ...
  • No, New Moon Absolutely, Positively Didn't Beat Dark Knight
Twi-hards, you were right: New Moon's Sunday box office was bigger than estimated.  Twi-hards, you were wrong: New Moon wasn't big enough to dethrone The Dark Knight as Hollywood's all-time opening-weekend champ. (Or, for that matter, to displace No. 2, Spider-Man 3.) Final numbers released today show that the Twilight sequel finished the weekend with a spectacular $142.8 million, up from the, well, spectacular $140.7 million of first reports. In the end, New Moon made $72.7 million on Friday, $42.3 million Saturday and $27.8 million on Sunday. Twi-hards, take note: Next time, the Dark Knight-beating number you're looking for on Sunday (assuming the other returns stay the same) is $43.5 million. Lotsa luck, Eclipse. ...
  • Modern Family: Is Shakira Getting In On the Act?
Shakira is no actress, but maybe it's time for her to become one. She and her hips are wanted over at ABC's new hit comedy Modern Family. "I'm trying to convince her to act," M.F. star and resident MILF Sofia Vergara told me at the American Music Awards. "Hopefully, she'll say yes." Vergara liked our suggestion that... Maybe Shakira should play Vergara's sister on the show. "Why not!" Vergara said. "We'll write a character especially for her if she wants to do it." Meanwhile, Vergara and her costars are the ones wanted by another primetime star... "I'm obsessed with Modern Family," V's Morena Baccarin said. "It's my new, latest guilty pleasure. I would love all of those characters and our characters to interchange and do each other's shows. I don't know if it would be good, but..." Aliens dropping in on Modern Family may not be so far-fetched—at least according to Baccarin. "I do believe there's something more out there," she said. "We can't possibly be the only living people in the universe." ...
  • Cougar Town to Resume Production After Courteney Cox's "Family Matter"
Looks like the Cox-Arquette family is moving past the "family matter" that temporarily halted production on Courteney's new ABC comedy, Cougar Town. A source close to the series just told us: "We were down last Friday and are on a scheduled hiatus this week. We'll resume production on Monday." Another source reveals that Courteney's husband, David Arquette, is still working... Arquette has been putting in long hours on the set of in an independent film, The Land of the Astronauts, which has been shooting in downtown Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley for the past two weeks. A source close to the actor says filming has been business as usual in recent days with "no apparent" family issues interfering. "David is a pro and seems to talk to his family often," the source says. Yesterday, the production took a planned day off, but resumed shooting this morning. So what was the family matter Courteney needed to tend to? That's being kept private. A castmember tells us that the cast and crew were told on Thursday that production would be halted on Friday, but not the reason why. The good news for fans is that, assuming production does get back up and running next Monday, the very brief hiatus will not affect ABC's planned Cougar Town schedule. ...
  • Would You Do...Natalie Portman and Her Blossoms?
Any excuse to put up a picture of Natalie Portman is OK by us! Nat celebrated the premiere of her new flick Brothers and looked absolutely yumma-do-me while doing it. But a little on the thin side, no? Guess that's Hollywood for ya. Love the hair, love the makeup, love the dress. Her 'do looks classy, while the strapless mini, busty-bouquet number keeps her looking young. We forget the age of this mature Harvard alum sometimes, but we do know that that vibrant blue hue is impeccable. One thing missing from the party was costar Jake Gyllenhaal. Is that because he was home playing with his hair? Nat totally threw Jakey under the bus (in a loving way) in People mag's Sexiest Man Alive issue. Says Portman: "He knows home remedies for distressed hair." That doesn't exactly make him sexy in our book. Hmm, is that why he lost out to Johnny Depp for the cover? But don't worry—Gyllenhaal is very rugged, too. Portman continues to People: "[Jake] can build a cabinet from scratch. He plays guitar and has a great voice. Kids and dogs love him. He loves his mom and sister and girlfriend. He's perfect. Too bad he's ugly." We'd stick with Nat over Jake, honestly. What about you? ...
  • Martha Stewart Brings Rachael Ray Feud to a Simmer
Martha Stewart wants you to know she has no intention of throwing any pies in Rachael Ray's face. The two TV titans' supposed spat came to a boil last week after Martha had some choice words for Oprah Winfrey's protégé on Nightline. "[Rachael] just did a new cookbook, which is just a reedit of a lot of her older recipes. And that's not good enough for me," she said. "Rachael is different. She's more of an entertainer...with her bubbly personality, than she is teacher, like me. That's not what she's professing to be." Of course, now that everyone has declared them frenemies, Martha feels the need to cook up some compliments for her younger counterpart. "I just want to take this opportunity just to address some comments that are circulating on the Internet regarding me and Rachael Ray," she told Emeril Lagasse on her show today. "And just for the record, there are no bad feelings between us, nor have there ever been." Apparently, the simple statement wasn't enough. Prepare your barf bags for the rest of the daytime TV lovefest. "I truly believe that Rachael has done a terrific job bringing people, many people who would have never even stepped into the kitchen or made a dish to cook," the ice queen melted. "I applaud Rachael for her enthusiastic approach to cooking...I really had a great time being a guest on her show, and it was a lot of fun to have her on this show making pie with me too. Come on back, Rachael, anytime you want, and I hope you have a yum-o Thanksgiving." Seriously, we were really hoping for a fierce pie fight. ...
  • Rob and Kristen "Relaxed" Together in NYC
After grueling months of promotion for New Moon, the Twilight cast has been finding some time to unwind in New York City. All while their li'l film dominates the box office. Friday night Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart skipped out on the New Moon afterparty and opted for a more private party together at Avenue in NYC, even showing some PG PDA. The couple also supposedly hit the town together last night. Rob was photographed leaving trendy eatery Megu in Tribeca, but Kristen was nowhere in paparazzi sight. How is it possible that they keep going to all these places without getting photographed together? Could it be because K.Stew just really wasn't there? Nope, Robsten's just that good! It has been confirmed that Stewart joined Rob and his party of eight for dinner at Megu last night. A source inside the restaurant tells E! Pattison was drinking a few of the Fritz Briem, an artisanal beer, as part of Megu's beer night, and was munching on some signature Japanese dishes like the kobe beef skewers and okaki asparagus.   Kristen enjoyed a sashimi platter and the king crab, and since the actress is still underage, she drank coca cola all night, natch. "They weren't overly affectionate," says a restaurant spy, "but everyone knows by now [Rob and Kristen] are together. They were all laughing and seemed to be having a really good time. They actually looked relaxed." Could New Yorkers be immune to this Twilight craziness? "People pretty much just let them be," our source says at the restaurant. It's shocking but true that New Yorkers seem to care less about celebs out and about in their city. But don't think Robsten got too comfortable. They were sure not to get pictured leaving together. Obviously, Rob took one for the team, offering up his sexy mug to the swarm of paparazzi waiting out front, while Kristen was able to slip out the back pretty much unnoticed (or rather, unphotographed). Way to be chivalrous, Rob! Maybe you two have been reading this blolumn after all. Where they'll be spending Thanksgiving is still up in the air, but something tells us you might see R.Pattz on a flight back to Los Angeles. — Additional Reporting by Ashley Fultz ...
  • John Kerry's Hollywood Daughter Cleared of DUI
Just as John Kerry predicted, his daughter's DUI charge has disappeared. But prosecutors say it's business as usual. The Los Angeles City Attorney's office confirmed to E! News today that actress-filmmaker Alexandra Forbes Kerry won't be facing a misdemeanor charge following her arrest last week. "Our prosecutors had an opportunity to review the report that was sent to us and felt there was insufficient evidence to warrant the filing of charges," spokesman Frank Mateljan said, noting that  the 36-year-old registered .06 on a Breathalyzer test—a smidge under California's legal limit of .08. He also dismissed any speculation of favoritism, saying that prosecutors traditionally decline to move forward with such borderline cases. After she was pulled over Thursday, her ever diplomatic dad released a statement noting Alexandra was under the limit and expressing his full support for her. ...
  • Suri's Big Apple Weekend—Winter Coat Not Included
While Tom Cruise is away (shooting a movie in Spain and avoiding runaway bulls), the girls will play! Then it was off to lunch at Balthazar in SoHo, followed by the ballet at the Joyce Theater. Their day out was topped off by a stop at Serendipity, a restaurant famous for its frozen hot chocolate. These girls are really living the high life, huh? We were about to crown Katie best mom ever when we realized that once again, Suri doesn't have a coat on! Temps in NYC are chilly enough that the little one should be wearing a jacket. ________ Maybe Suri won't wear a coat because she wants to show off her pretty dresses? See more of Suri's style in our Fashion Spotlight gallery! ...
  • TLC Lets the Door Hit Jon (Not So Much Kate) on the Way Out
At this point, there's almost nothing we don't already know about Jon and Kate Gosselin. He likes Ed Hardy, ticking every box off the midlife crisis checklist and demanding privacy from the paparazzi, unless of course they want to patronize his lemonade stand or capture him bringing flowers to his ex-wife. His dislikes include spell-check and Nancy Grace. She, on the other hand, enjoys employing ghost writers to pen cookbooks on organic food, berating her personality-challenged husband and recouping hundreds of thousands of dollars that were rightfully hers to begin with. She's not such a fan of anything less than industrial-strength pomade. This much we know. But TLC is reminding us of a few other Gosselin truths that have gotten lost along the way in the torn-apart family's reality swan song, as Jon & Kate Plus 8 comes to its confessional- and montage-filled series end tonight. Like, no matter how heinous you think their parents are—and at this point it is just a matter of degrees—those Plus 8 are downright adorable (and, lest we forget, the reason viewers flocked in the first place). And TLC is taking full advantage of the (for now) unspoiled cuteness, airing some of the kids' best bits right alongside their parents' worst as all five seasons come to a close. "It's very, very...it's sad, it's cut short," Kate says of the show's more or less legally forced finale. "It's too soon." No offense, Kate, but we think we speak for everyone when we say, speak for yourself. "It's been a great run. I'm very grateful." As is, thanks to those residuals if not those lawsuits, TLC. So watch the rest of the sneak peeks below and tell us, what will you miss most about this show? ...
